The old media model and the new blog one - advertising, ‘own logo’ and the future of the net economy

Posted in Blogging for Money, General on June 16th, 2005

Reading the comments on this problogger post today the blindingly obvious occurred to me, namely that the blog-with-ads model is no different, really, to the current media models we have in place.

Essentially writers / broadcasters publish their work, try to get as big as readership as possible, and get advertising revenue through that. OK, ad revenue may be click through, there may well be narrowcasting involved and it’s on a different scale but essentially that’s it.

And fair play to them too! I think really if you’re going to start criticising blogs running ads, trying to get more readers / ad revenue and trying to make a living out of this then you’d better be eschewing that copy of the Times, Wired, and whatever other publication you might read. Heck, I’d forget about that visit to the news website you frequent… it’ll only be the bbc now for you baby!

But having said that it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a new model here, in a very commercial sense, and it’s with a heavy dash of irony that in this instance I’m drawing upon HobbyPrincess’s ‘Own Logo‘ concept. Less hits but more good sh*t - Get rid of your RSS extracts and join the full feed brigade!

So I can tell you now, officially, that you will probably lose between 30 - 50% of your visits (although not necessarily page views) when you switch from providing extracted RSS feeds to full feeds.

It could also, possibly, be the case that you get fewer comments (one of the main reasons I was providing extracts was because I thought it might get me more comments), although that could equally be a result of me writing far less interesting posts ;o>

But is this a bad thing? Continue reading Less hits but more good sh*t - Get rid of your RSS extracts and join the full feed brigade!

Use the same domain

Here’s a little tip about how to get yourself better search results, use the same domain.

Basically if you, for example, have a blog at incsub.org/blog and one at incsub.org and one at incsub.org/flashy then the links that each of these pick up will help launch each other… granted not to the same degree but they certainly will.

Blog for ads or blog for yourself

Posted in Blogging for Money, General on May 13th, 2005

Probably the biggest question you want to ask when you’re considering blogging as a means to making money is whether you’re going to be better off blogging for ads or blogging for yourself.

For example, if you are just looking for some supplemental advertising income you’d better choose your topics right… write all you want about your life, your profession and the books you enjoy… you’re not going to get many search engine hits (which are what will bring you ad revenue… just don’t even think about RSS, unless you’re planning on getting syndicated).
