Damn what a comment!
what a great Bitch slap that was, you are probably wondering what I’m talking about, I occasionally read multiple blogs, some popular and some not so much, but the biggest thing I love to do is to get involved in the conversation, and to read what others are conversing about, but while I was checking out a blog the other day I saw what I can only describe as one of the best Bitch slaps I’ve read. Here is the context.
Week 1 of the Affiliate Marketing Showdown Versus Tyler Cruz
August 22nd, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park
Alright so it’s been over a week since Tyler Cruz and I started our affiliate marketing showdown, but honestly little has happened since then. The whole point of the competition was to motivate both of us to work on our campaigns and to improve on our PPC affiliate marketing skills. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet.
I’m not going to sit here and complain. I’ve been extremely busy with SEO client work and some of the other projects on my plate, but a competition is a competition and I’m not going go down without putting up a fight.
Below are the few stats that I currently have. I chose an offer from a top affiliate network and drove traffic solely from the Google Adwords content network.
As you can see, I didn’t have any conversions the first 2 days, but revenue increased on the third day after I made a few tweaks. However, starting from the fourth day, my campaigns stopped sending traffic for some reason. I contacted Adwords support, but they never got back to me. I’m assuming it’s a Google slap because of my blatant 1-page affiliate site. Any other ideas?
In the next 2-3 weeks, I’ll have to build out a full affiliate microsite with various landing pages and articles (to prevent getting slapped by Google). I’ll also expand on my keywords, experiment with various ad copies, and try out Facebook Ads if I have time. I won a free copy of SpeedPPC compliments of Big Jason Henderson so that should definitely help in quickly getting my campaigns up as well.
As for now, it looks like I have the lead against Tyler, who has done nothing to improve on his losing campaigns. This whole competition could change dramatically in a heartbeat and I expect it to do so as I invest more time and money into my campaigns (hopefully Tyler too).
Look forward to my affiliate marketing posts in the next couple of weeks. I’ll outline the entire process that I use in setting up my campaigns and hopefully make a ton of profit! Subscribe to the RSS feed to stay updated on the latest.
So as you can read in the post, Both of the competitors were too busy to actually participate in the competition they started. winningtheweb.com claims 1531 Readers, and TylerCruz.com claims 1674. So roughly 3000 readers have been completely let down, and it get’s worse. A new reader found the site and felt just like i did, let down, and while i tried to insitgate a who’s who idea. She, Rae Let them have it and with a really great comment. Here is the comment, what do you think of what was said?

Wow. I somehow ended up here today and gotta say, was a little disappointed to read this post and then click through to Tyler’s site (which I had never seen before) and see the flat out non-interest in a contest/learning experience you guys promised your visitors. Not picking on you guys or trying to be mean, just saying, to those who aren’t regular visitors (like me)… if seems a little like you don’t care about the commitments you made to your readers and can be a bit of a turn off. If that makes sense. That said, I know properly managing your time expectations/availability is one of the hardest things to deal with while having a busy and growing business.
Yeah, Couldn’t have said it better, really that was great. what are comments worth if you don’t communicate with them. It made me think about the value of communicating with your reader and not just posting and then letting others comment. What do you think?

Rae makes a few good points with her comment and I guess it’s one of the pitfalls of stretching yourself too thin, not giving yourself enough time to finish everything you have planned. I think it’s a problem for a lot of bloggers at some point, real life and other duties get in the way and eat up all your time. I can understand the readers not being happy about the situation though.
Dot Com Dud, I couldn’t agree with you more, however why start a contest that you know you aren’t going to participate in, it’s like signing up for a marathon and then showing up and walking the whole way, then giving up after a couple of miles. You make a good point of stretching yourself too thin, but then again what is a business, but stretching yourself too thin all the time right?
I can understand how you may be disappointed - as you should be. But we never promised our readers that we were going all out on this. The intent was always to try to force each other to work more on our affiliate marketing campaigns - precisely because we never put enough time into them.
If you read my original post on the competition again, at http://www.tylercruz.com/affiliate-competition-tyler-vs-gyutae/, you’ll notice that I warned everyone and predicted that i’d be very busy and would not have much time to put towards the competition…
Anyhow, it’s not over yet. There’s still about a week and a half left… and you’ll probably see us work harder as the possibility of having to post a humiliation video looms closer…
Tyler, Thanks for commenting, I have been an avid reader of yours for quite awhile, and while I understand completely, really i do about the “busy” factor, I was hoping for a good run for my money, if you catch my drift. I haven’t done much affiliate marketing, frankly none at all, but had wanted to see what you guys could do and then follow in your footsteps.
Thanks for visiting, and know that I do look forward to see the competition take off!
Oh dear BlogSavvy, 1 adsense click worth of profit for all that work. It looks like you had just 1 sale. I thought you PPC guys spend $1,000’s per day on PPC campaigns from what I read on Uber affiliate and stuff?
SEO is the way to go I think for long term.
Andy, If you read the post, it’s not about me, it’s about the contest between Tyler Cruz and Winning the Web. Your point is taken that all that work and only 1 sale, Terrible I know. That’s why I posted about it, and the comment a reader posted to call them out do do something more! Thanks for commenting though.
